Brisighella

Last Updated on 03/05/2023

Brisighella is considered one of the most beautiful small towns. The town is good, but it’s too small, literally two and a half streets.

I put it on the road from Garda to Rimini: the city is not suitable as an independent travel destination, only “on the road” and with something else or hiking in the hills.

The map of “something else” you can find here (around Rimini) and here (around Ravenna).

How to get to Brisighella

Normal road to the city – along the railway. The second road on the hills – for fans of winding rural country roads with a width of one and a half cars.

Public transport: train from Faenza.

Sights in the city are “donkey alley” and three hills:

  • with a castle (early 14th century), where there is a museum of peasant life,
  • with a church (18th century)
  • and a clock tower (rebuilt in the 19th century).

The churches in the city are not very old. The oldest church in the valley is located a kilometer from Brisigella and is called S. Giovanni in Ottavo (8-10th centuries).

“Donkey alley” in Brisighella

“Donkey alley” – originally an open part of the fortifications. When the protective function became less important, the road became part of residential buildings. And since the houses were mainly occupied by workers who transported gypsum on donkeys, the alley got the such name.

We go up to the castle (the museum was closed).

Look to the clock tower. If the museum is closed, it makes no sense to climb to castle. Choose better the hill with clock tower or with the church. The castle looks more impressive from other hills. Moreover you receive good views of montains from church.
